Why did you choose Coles Group Limited?

While I had good experiences working alone and in small companies before finishing my degree, I knew that Coles Group Limited's sheer size could provide me with a range of career opportunities in many different areas of IT.

How did you find out about the Coles Group Limited Graduate Program?

I first found out about the Coles Group Limited Graduate Program when I was at university. Most of my friends were also looking for full-time work and news about the Graduate Program spread quickly.

What do you think about the rotational structure?

The rotational structure of the program has been great. I started with three months in e-technology and worked mainly with content management software for the human resources portal area. I spent the next three months with the Program Management Office where I helped to develop and upgrade reporting tools. I then moved locations for six months and worked in the Infrastructure Services & Operations team to support portal infrastructure. Right now I'm with the Application Development and Support team working with data warehouses.

Have you had much access to training?

While I built great technical skills at university, it's the internal training programs run by Coles Group Limited that have helped me with my project management, time management and interpersonal skills. I've had the chance to really develop and improve the skills needed for working with others and communicating with a whole range of people.

What do you most like about working for Coles Group Limited?

There are so many things that make Coles Group Limited a great place to work. The people are really friendly and supportive, and the career opportunities are fantastic. No matter where you work, you can always be a valuable member of a team and this is a tremendous boost to your confidence in your own ability.

What attracted you to Coles Group Limited?

A reputation for looking after its employees and the fact that it was one of Australia's largest employers is what most attracted me to a career with Coles Group Limited. I first heard about the Graduate Program while I was at university. In fact, Coles Group Limited was a sponsor of my degree and when they made a presentation to the students in my course, I couldn't apply fast enough.

Which areas have you worked in so far?

So far I've already worked in the SAP team and with the Officeworks Business Systems and Processes team. I recently joined the Project Management Office and have been working on the Coles Express POS upgrade. The rotations have been fantastic because I've been exposed to different business areas and have met many people that I may not have had contact with. This not only includes people like our CEO, John Fletcher, and his direct reports, but other graduates and staff members.

What are the most important skills for your job? Have you had a chance to improve them?

Working with so many different kinds of people means that the ability to communicate well with everyone is absolutely essential. Coles Group Limited champions internal training and since I've started I've been able to take part in two courses that have supported my time management, professional development and people skills.

If you could offer prospective graduates some advice, what would you tell them?

I would advise anyone who wants to join Coles Group Limited to stay open minded about the roles or tasks you're asked to perform. The Graduate Program could introduce you to a career path you never even imagined.
