Nature

As a food and drink retailer, our business depends on a thriving natural environment – where healthy ecosystems and biodiversity underpin the food system and resilient product supply chains.

Our approach and targets

We seek to advance nature-positive outcomes by working with Australian farmers, suppliers and industry partners to strengthen supply chain resilience, support responsible sourcing practices and safeguard animal welfare.

We recognise the important role nature plays to our operations and supply chain, and because of this, nature is a key pillar within our FY26–FY30 Sustainability Strategy.

We understand nature is inextricably linked with climate and where possible, we seek to integrate nature into our approach to climate change.

During FY26, we continued to build on work undertaken in FY24 and FY25 to develop our Nature Roadmap and complete a high-level assessment of Coles’ nature-related impacts, dependencies and potential financial risks. This work indicated that our most significant nature-related risks are concentrated in our upstream agricultural and seafood supply chains rather than in our direct operations. Building on this assessment, and informed by several years of targeted program reviews, risk assessments and enhanced oversight of farmed salmon sourcing in Tasmania, in FY26 we completed a more detailed review of nature-related risks associated with seafood sourcing. Refer to our FY26 Sustainability Supplement for further details on this project.

Progress with respect to the nature pillar of our strategy was more limited than anticipated during FY26 as resources were prioritised toward implementing Australia’s mandatory climate-related reporting requirements. We will continue to further develop our approach to nature in FY27 and progressively integrate material nature-related risks and opportunities into our broader sustainability and climate strategy.

Our nature related targets, commitments and ambitions include:

  • Ambition to achieve no deforestation across material Coles Own Brand primary deforestation linked commodities1 (no later than 31 December 2025)2.
  • Maintain appropriate animal welfare and responsible sourcing standards3 within Coles Own Brand.
  • Maintain greater than 85% of cage-free shell egg supply.
  • Achieve 100% of cage-free eggs used as ingredients in Coles Own Brand products4.
